Car: 1964 Chevy Corvair Monza

Car's Name: Sharky

Car's specs: Air-cooled rear engine(Flat 6), 2-speed automatic, convertible with automatic top, 108" wheel base, basic horse power: 110, original price in 1964: $2492; 31,045 made for 1964

I'm so in love with my car that despite the hard work to keep Sharky going and the fact that Ralph Nader hates him, I can't imagine my life without him.

Crazy Car Story: I was driving up the I-5 coming home from L.A. when Sharky started overheating. It was about 95 degrees out and I checked the oil and the level was fine. I also checked the belt tension again fine. My friend Sophie and I proceeded up the 5 and smoke started billowing out the back. The oil release valve wasn't functioning properly so Sharky wasn't getting his much-needed oil, I had thrown a rod! We had to hitchhike -- some guy picked us up in his van -- of course it had to be a van! He took us to the next town (Coalinga -- love those cows!) and dropped us at a gas station. I got out of the front seat, but Sophie's door was jammed -- her eyes were huge. I thought this was going to turn out to be like a bad after school special..."Hey kids, don't hitchhike and if you do, for God's sake don't get in to a van!" We were so scared -- turns out it only opens from the outside. I let her out and we spent 7 glorious hours waiting for a ride back to San Francisco.

I became a Belle because my boyfriend, Scott, works at a screen printing shop (Babylon Burning). The Hell's Belles printed some T-shirts there and asked if anyone knew any women with old cars...
